Principal’s Message

Love…bears all things, believes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7

The cold winds of winter continue as we open this month to many events celebrating who we are as Catholics and the “Good News” that the students of Saint Matthias School are growing daily in faith and knowledge. This month begins with our celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Our Expo and Open House follows the 10 am Opening Mass on January 31. Our Book Fair will be open all week.

February 2nd is Special Persons’ Day. Bring a grandparent, neighbor, or friend and enjoy a short program by PreK to grade 4. The 9:00 performance is followed by refreshments and the Book Fair.

On Wednesday, February 3rd, we will have the traditional Open House for current and new parents. Come visit the classrooms between 9:00 and 11:00 to observe students in their learning environment. Because instruction is taking place, we ask that young children are not brought to the rooms on this day. On Wednesday evening, at 7pm, we will hold our Winter Concert. Our Experienced Band and Children’s Choir will perform. All are welcome to enjoy music and shop the Book Fair following the concert.

Thursday is Student Appreciation Day. The children will enjoy dressing down and having free pizza. Special Science Assemblies on Energy will take place. Thank you to the St. Matthias Educational Foundation for sponsoring these programs by the Franklin Institute.

Friday is Teachers’ Appreciation Day. There will be a 12:00 dismissal and the St. Matthias Educational Foundation will take the faculty and staff “out to lunch” to show our gratitude for their service to the Family of St. Matthias School. A special visit will be made by Bishop Witold. He will tour our Expo in the gym, visit all of the classrooms, and join us for lunch. We are grateful for this blessing!

A heartfelt thank you goes to all who will help to make our week a success. Every volunteer is important whether you’re serving coffee, directing school tours, coordinating a free lunch for a family of 400+, or sharing the “good news” about our school throughout the neighborhood.

Progress Reports will be distributed on Feb. 10th. This signals the halfway point of this school year. Please review these reports very carefully and schedule an appointment with your child’s teachers if you have concerns. (This progress report will clearly indicate if your child’s work is below grade level. This would be a serious warning that intervention is necessary for a successful promotion in June.) Report Cards will be distributed on March 18th.

February 10th is also Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. We will enter into a special period of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. May this be a time to grow in mercy and love.
