Principal’s Message

“Let us come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith, because we have been made free…”

                                                                                                            Hebrews 10:22

April showers have turned Ridgewood into a beautiful garden adorned with blooms of every shape and color.  Take a moment to enjoy the glory of God’s creation as it springs anew in our backyard!

May’s calendar is definitely reflective of the busy days that signal the coming end of our school year.  Many field trips have been planned so pray for good weather as our students journey to parks and plays.  Our classes will have new adventures at Club Getaway, Green Meadows Farm, Rudy’s Bakery, and more.  It’s exciting to hear of the lessons and activities each class enjoys on these important educational excursions.  Thank you for supporting our field trip efforts through funding and chaperoning.  Remember all chaperones must be Virtus trained.

Math and science will be a focus for this month as the fourth, sixth, and eighth graders face the challenges of the New York State Assessments.  Fourth and eighth graders will spend one science test session working on lab experiments to demonstrate their skills of investigation and critical analysis.  Another test session is devoted to a written test of content supported by the NYS Learning Standards.  The math tests for grades 4, 6, and 8 include multiple choice, short answer, and extended responses.  Samples of all NYS test questions may be viewed at www.engageny.org .

Our faith continues to be central to all we do at St. Matthias School.  Our second graders have worked hard to prepare for their First Holy Communion.  Let us pray that this special moment will be the first of a lifetime of communions for them.  Our eighth graders are continuing to prepare for Confirmation which will be received on the Feast of Pentecost this year.  We will honor Mary with our annual May Crowning, too.

The month of May is also filled with many extracurricular activities that help to build community and support our school mission.  Shrek, the Musical, Jr. will be performed by students from grades 6, 7, and 8 on May 5th & 6th.  Tickets are $5.00.  Band Lessons, Piano classes, Choir practices, Lego Club, PDHP Rap Groups and Media 8 continue to meet throughout the month. The Spring Band Concert will take place on May 31 at 7:00pm.  All school families are welcome to enjoy our band’s progress and celebrate the completion of another year of band lessons.

Our transition to academy continues to progress.  We are waiting for acceptance of our application by the State of New York.  Once this is complete, we can formalize the seating of our new school board.  These individuals are already hard at work behind the scenes providing us support and participating in seminars to better prepare them for their leadership roles.  A formal announcement of the board is pending their official recognition.

In addition, please make note of the dates for graduation and the Pre-k and Kindergarten closing ceremonies.  School closes at 12:00 on June 23 for grades 1 to 7.

It seems so unbelievable that we are again facing the final weeks of our school year.  As we look back over the past months, let us rejoice at the growth we have witnessed in our children.  It is with pride that I commend our school families on their support and encouragement of our students.  Our children have grown in faith and knowledge…we are truly blessed!

Sincerely,

Barbara Wehnes

Principal
