Principal’s Message

Be still, and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10

A new school year begins! It’s an exciting time for all of us. We say good-bye to the heat of the summer and welcome the cool breezes of autumn. The rooms have been made ready, books purchased, and pencils sharpened. We gather and wait for the first bell to ring.

This year will be filled with lessons, activities, and events that will challenge and motivate our children to be the best they can be. They will be involved in countless experiences which build foundations of mind and spirit. We will practice stewardship for our family, our community, and our planet. I look forward to sharing this adventure with you and your child(ren) as we celebrate the first year of St. Matthias Catholic Academy.

September is filled with opportunities to learn about our academy and to find new ways to support our school family. Our newest families will attend orientation meetings for Pre-K 3 & 4 and Kindergarten. These gatherings, along with the “Meet the Teacher” class meetings, are structured so that each parent has a chance to learn about their child’s class and to meet the families of his or her classmates. Please plan to attend.

We welcome our new Academy Board under the direction of Mrs. Ellen McCarthy Coyne. The Board members have been hard at work this summer planning for a successful school year. You will have an opportunity to meet with the Board on October 5th at 7pm. They are looking for your input and for volunteers to serve on the marketing and fundraising committees. Our Board will work hand-in-hand with our Home Academy Association (HAA) and the St. Matthias Educational Foundation to foster the Academy’s mission and raise the necessary funds to support our operating costs and special projects.

The success of our Academy and our student body hinges on the “team efforts” critical to the home-academy-community connection. Thank you for participating in this year’s Bridge the Gap campaign and for beginning to think about serving the HAA or SMCA Board. We have committee chairpersons established for food sales, the candy sale, and the Christmas Show. We are always in need of volunteers to assist with school events and lunch duty. No gift of time and talent is ever wasted here at St. Matthias. Please consider how you might get involved in the life of our academy. I guarantee that you will be richly rewarded for every act of service to our children.

I wish you a school year filled with blessings and success!

Barbara Wehnes, Principal

Does the HAA have a list of objectives and ideas that they are working on and where is this list? And I will pose the same question to for the Academy Board? How can we participate if there isn’t a list of objectives that we can help with our specialties, unless we are looking for drones which is fine also but what help are they looking for from us as parent to better support the mission?

    • We will host a “Meet the Board” Meeting in the gym on October 5,2017 at 7pm. This would be a wonderful opportunity to hear of the Board’s plans and to offer to become more involved. The Board is seeking parent involvement on two committees, marketing and fundraising.

    • Ellen McCarthy-Coyne says:

Hello, and thank you for your question. My name is Ellen McCarthy-Coyne, and I’m delighted to be the Chair of the Board of St. Matthias Catholic Academy (SMCA).

St. Matthias has been wonderful to my family. My husband, Ed Coyne, is a member of the St. Matthias Ridgewood class of 1970 and our son, Sean McCarthy-Coyne, graduated in 2013. St. Matthias has been very good to our family, taking us in when Superstorm Sandy destroyed our Breezy Point home. We relocated to Ridgewood while we rebuilt, and both Sean and his younger brother Eddie attended St. Matthias for the 2012-2013 school year.

Now, as the Diocese mandates that the school become an Academy, I am giving back by serving as the Chair of the newly formed SMCA Board of Directors. Only the name is changing – St. Matthias will continue to offer Foundations of Mind and Spirit (our new tag line) to our students.

Please consider assisting St. Matthias by volunteering to serve on our Marketing or Development Committees. Email me at mccarthye2754@gmail.com for more information, or to learn about other ways you can help.

      With gratitude,
      Ellen McCarthy-Coyne
