Principal’s Message

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart…”                               Matthew 11:29

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  Each September begins with sweet summer memories and excitement as the school doors open once again.  This year promises to be filled with challenges and adventures as the Saint Matthias faculty, students, and staff journey together.

We welcome our newest faculty member to our academy.  Ms. Pospischil has been assigned to Class 4B.  We are looking forward to her gifts and talents as a veteran teacher who treasures her ministry in Catholic education.  We also congratulate Mr. Agron on the birth of his son in July.

Another wonderful addition to our academy comes in the form of a very unique STEM lab.  We are in the process of installing a hydroponic lab on our third floor.  St. Matthias Catholic Academy will be the first private, elementary school in the New York City area to house such a lab!  Our lab will be used by every grade level as they study sustainability and eco-friendly citizenship.  Tomatoes, cucumbers, leafy vegetables and herbs will be grown in a variety of mediums, fed by nutrient-rich water.  Several systems will be showcased.  A full curriculum and professional development are included in this program.  Our thanks go out to our Academy Board for bringing this exciting new program to our children.  Watch for updates on the installation as school begins.

September’s calendar is a busy one filled with orientation sessions, parent meetings, and prayer opportunities.  We have scheduled the parent meetings for various grades throughout the month.  We hope that this gives parents with more than one Saint Matthias student the ability to attend class meetings for each child.  It is important for parents to meet the teachers, understand the class routines and expectations, and get answers to any questions they may have as the school year begins.  This helps everyone to make a “strong start” on the road to success.

Our Home Academy Association continues to thrive providing our school community with spirit events and coordinating fundraising critical to our academy’s fiscal health.  We appreciate all that our committee members and volunteers have done in the past.  We welcome anyone interested in being a committee member or HAA volunteer.  Past events have included our food sales, candy drive, Christmas Shows, Halloween parties, family bingo night, teen dances, our Spring Musical, the Welch’s Sale, and more.   Our candy drive begins on September 7th and ends on October15th.  This is our largest fundraiser of the year.  Please help us make this year’s sale a great success!  Our “thanks” go to Mrs. Byron for once again managing our candy sale.

Please remember that the 2018-2019 academy contract includes ten hours of volunteer service to our school.  We are looking forward to your involvement.  All volunteers working events or hours where children are present are required to be Virtus trained.  You can register for the course at www.virtusonline.org .  Virtus training may be completed at any parish in the Diocese of Brooklyn.  Four dates have been scheduled at SMCA: 9/11 (Eng), 9/24 (Sp), 10/3 (Eng), 10/9, (Sp).  In addition to the course, participants authorize a background check and sign a code of conduct.  This requirement is completed once and is valid for the time your child attends our academy.

As this month’s quote reminds us, each and every day we follow Jesus’ example of love and service.  This year we will focus on discipleship as illustrated by Jesus and His Apostles.  Let us work together to make this a year of hard work, love, and compassion.  May God bless us and help us to grow in faith and knowledge!

Barbara Wehnes, Principal
