November Highlights

November 1 – 8:30 All Saints Day Mass

November 9 – Professional Day (No School)

November 10 – Veterans Day (No School)

November 17 – 12:00 dismissal

November 22 – 8:30 Mass

November 23-24 – No School (Thanksgiving Recess)

 

4th Grade Social Studies  – Strudents are learning about the early people of New York.  They are learning about the 2 Native American groups (Algonquians and Iroquois) that lived in New York. They are learning how Native Americans used their natural resources to meet their needs.

3rd Grade Social Studies - Students are learning about Italy.  They are currently learning about the government of Italy, and will also learn about the culture and economy of Italy.

4A Grammar - Students are learning about nouns (common, proper, singular, plural, singular possessive, plural possesssive, etc.)  There is a grammar review group that is available to students. It is a great opportunity for students to review any information that they need further explained.

4A Religion - Students are learning how God gives us the freedom to choose to love him and follow him.  They are learning how God calls us to value and respect all people.  Students are  also learning that we need to make the right choices for us to grow closer to God.

Free Family Films

Select Regal theaters offer a Free Family Film Festival each summer, screening PG and G-rated movies at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday. Go to regmovies.com for a schedule. AMC runs a similar program, Summer MovieCamp, on Wednesdays, with $1 tickets; check out amctheaters.com for more details.

Free Bowling

Hundreds of alleys across the country participate in the summerlong Kids Bowl Free program, which allows children to play two games a day on the house. To register for a pass, roll on over to kidsbowlfree.com.

Story Time

Barnes & Noble, and most independent book shops, as well as libraries, host story hours for kids. Find schedules and other information at bn.com, or by phoning your local library or bookstore.

Museum Discounts

Some 120 museums across the country will admit you and your kids for free the first full weekend of every month if you flash your Bank of America debit, credit, or ATM card. Visit bankofamerica.com/museums for info. Not a cardholder? Not to worry: Many museums, big and small, offer free (or heavily discounted) admission for families one day a week. Put in a call to your local museum to inquire about dates and fees.

Third Grade Social Studies

 Students are learning about Mexico.

They are learning about the Land of Mexico, History of Mexico, and the Culture of Mexico.

After we learn about Mexico the students will choose their own country to research.  They will find many facts about the country and in class they will write a book all about their country.

They will present to the class what they learned and share foods that are a part of the country they researched.

Fourth Grade Social Studies

Industrialization in New York – Students will learn about new technology and modern inventions in New York that made life easier for people.

New York and The Civil War – Students will learn about important reformers in New York and how they worked to fight against slavery and for women’s rights.

Fourth grade Social Studies

Students are learning about Colonial Life in New York

Students will learn about the different jobs in colonial life, and will be able to choose a job that they would have liked to do in colonial New York.

They have created time lines about their own life events, and have interviewed family members about important events in their life.

Students have been learning about Native Americans.

Native American project due Monday, December 19th .4th-grade-native-american-project

Third grade Social Studies

Students are learning about China.

They are learning about Ancient China, and the many dynasties and inventions of China.

Test on Ancient China Wednesday, January 25th.

They have learned about the geography and land of China.

Students have been learning about Italy.

They will finish their country unit on Italy with creating an All About Italy booklet.

Students will start leatning about China as our next country unit.

CHRISTMAS SHOW

The  Christmas Show will be on Friday, December 9th.  The fourth grade students will be in both the day and evening shows.  They need to wear white shirts and black pants.  They will also need to bring a hat, scarf, and a sweater (preferably Christmas colors).  They will need to wear black shoes.

 

 

 

 

Advent begins on Sunday, November 27th, 2016.advent

The fourth grade students will be learning about Advent in Religion.  They will learn that it is the season to prepare for the coming of the Lord.

Welcome to October!

This month the 4th and 8th grades hosted a bake sale to raise awareness for breast cancer.  They worked together making posters that were displayed around the school.  They also made bracelets that were sold ast the bake sale.  Thank you to all parents who donated to the bake sale.  We reaised $1,325.00.

Students will take the terra nova test October 12th – October 18th.  Please have your child come to school with sharpened #2 pencils.

The school Halloween party will be on Friday, October 21, 2016

Welcome back to school!

It has been a pleasure to get to know all the third grade students and to welcome back all the fourth grade students.

 

 

It has been a wonderful year back at St. Matthias.

Thank you to all the parents and students for making this a successful year filled with learning and fun.

Some activities you and your family can participate in that are free or suggested admission are:

  • American Museum of Natural History
  • Museum of the City of New York
  • Queens County Farm Museum
  • Queens Museum of Art

Activitities that are free on certain days or times:

  • Bronx Zoo – every Wednesday is free
  • Children’s Museum of Arts – Pay as you wish Thursday 4-6 p.m.
  • New York Aquarium – Suggested donation Friday after 4 p.m.
  • New York Botanical Garden – free all day Wednesday

There are many other activities you and your family can enjoy such as parks, beaches, pools, and the public libraries.

4th Grade State Tests

NYS ELA test – Tuesday, April 5 – Thursday, April 7.

NYS Math test – Wednesday, April 13 – Friday, April 15.

Students are encouraged to eat a nutritious breakfast, and bring in at least 3 sharpened pencils on testing days.

Fourth Grade Social Studies

Students are learning about the three branches of government and the Bill of Rights.

Students are also working on document based questions and primary documents.

They are learning to be able to use historical documents and answer short answer and essay questions based on the documents.

Students are currently working on a historical biography project that is due Friday, April 8th, 2016.

Third Grade Social Studies

Students are learning about the country of Mexico.

We have been learning about the geography, landforms, animals, plants and flag of Mexico.

We are going to learn about the history of Mexico.

Religion

Students are learning about the 10 commandments.

We learned about the first 3 commmandments, and how they help us to show love and respect to God.

We are going to learn about the 4th commandment – Honor your Mother and Father.

Reading

Students are beginnining a unit on Jackie Robinson. We will begin reading the story “Teammates” on April 15.  Other assignments will include:  reading a play “Jackie Robinson, MVP”, several writing assignments, and watching the movie The Jackie Robinson Story,  in which Jackie Robinson himself stars.  This unit incorporates Reading, Language, Social Studies and Religion curriculums, and is interesting and informative (even for non-baseball fans).

Recipe book report due April 5th, 2016.

Field Trip

A field trip to Bethpage Village Restoration is planned for fourth grade students on May 13.  

A notice with trip information was sent home with students.

 

 

Grade 4A  Reading

On Monday, November 2nd the students will begin reading every night for 20 minutes and complete a reading log.
