Grade 5B

Grade 5 Math Class is Learning How to Interpret and Evaluate Numerical Expressions.

We are currently working on a Math project, “Figure Me Out!”

Students need to answer the reading prompt with a numerical expression to reveal facts about them.

The challenge is for the class to interpret all the math clues and evaluate them to reveal the identity of the classmate!

The project challenged the students to measure perimeters and areas of their pet and backyard.

Which pet would you choose, a squirrel, rabbit, cat or dog?

What features will your pet have?

How would you design the backyard?

What items will you include in the backyard?

Grade 5 Field Trip

It’s All About Technology!

#Apple #Coding #Swift Playgrounds

The students attended a training class for coding at the Apple Store. They are the first class from St. Matthias C.A. to have the opportunity to participate in an interactive educational technology experience hosted by Apple. The students  worked in pairs on ipads to set up a maze and command a character to complete the obstacle course successfully. Thank you to our chaperones for volunteering to join us on our trip! 

The experience was amazing!

Grades 5 and 6 participated in a Puppeteer workshop at St. Matthias Catholic Academy.

The event was hosted by “Caravan Puppets”

Students engaged in designing their own puppets using a variety of tools and materials. The classes were each assigned a topic to write a script and perform. Some of the students decided to use improvisation for their skits. With confidence the students formed a parade and walked through the school building proudly displaying their puppets. Catholic School’s Week Celebrated at St. Matthias Catholic Academy!

Grade 5 is very excited to display their projects for everyone to see how hard they’ve been working!

What’s in a Name? Psalm 139: 1-12,

Students interviewed a parent to learn the origin of their name which you can read about in their name puzzles.

Our titles were given to us by our classmates. The feelings we have about our name is on the reflection board.

Students made photo frames to showcase themselves and we put them together creating a photo cube for our class!

The fifth grades are already practicing for the annual Christmas Show.

Along with the preparation, we would like to inform you of a few details necessary for our show to be a success.

The dress code for the Christmas Show is as follows:

Girls: White long sleeve blouse, Black pants (yoga pants), and Boots

Boys: White long sleeve shirt, Black pants, Black shoes or Boots

To ensure each student has what they need for the show, the teachers have purchased the accessaries for the classes.

The cost per student is $6.00. The students will keep their accessaries after the show.  

Please send in the $6.00, in cash along with the tear-off slip to your child’s homeroom teacher by Nov. 17.

We appreciate your cooperation and hope to see you at the show on December 15, @7:00!

December was a busy month for Grade 5.B

We started with the season of Advent and made Advent wreaths for Christmas.

We invited our buddies and helped them make Advent wreaths for the season.

Our Christmas show was amazing, I’m so proud of my students on their performance.

Grade 5 went to see “A Christmas Carol” at the Queens College Theatre.

For a class project the students created their own Christmas Jingles to share with the class.

The students had a book exchange with their classmates in the spirit of giving!
